David Tate
David Tate joined us as our Winemaker in May of 2007. David brings with him a wealth of experience. Most recently David was with Ridge Vineyards as the Assistant Winemaker. During five years atop Montebello he garnered immense amounts of knowledge in every facet of premium wine production. His experience at Ridge working with the Montebello Cabernet is especially relevant with respect to working with our own Spring Mountain fruit.
In the 90's David worked in the Barossa Valley in Australia amongst old vine Shiraz for J&J Hahn, as well as in the vineyards for Rockford's and St. Hallet's. David then traveled to Provence and worked as an Assistant to the Winemaker in one of Provence's top wineries, Domaine Richeaume. He learned the passion and skills involved in every aspect of winemaking, particularly those needed to produce premium, small production wines.
After these two geographically far flung hands on experiences David attended Brock University obtaining a four-year honors degree in Enology and Viticulture, while working for Vineland Estates winery. Within this David completed a one year academic program in New Zealand to gain knowledge at Lincoln University and work for a small start up winery in Canterbury. David's thesis from Brock University, A Spectrophotometric Assay of â-glucosidase, was published in the American Journal of Enology and Viticulture in 2005.
David is originally from British Columbia, Canada and in his spare time enjoys anything wine as well as snowboarding and riding up the coast on his motorcycle.
